Actually, your poop is telling you something! The shape, form, and color of your poop tells you a load about your overall health. Some things that can affect your poo are nutrition, stress, hydration, intolerances, and mood.
Now, I know it can be a little awkward to examine your Number 2 before giving it a flush, but here is why you should every once in awhile. The form, consistency, and color tells you how well your gut is breaking down, absorbing, and digesting your food. If you didn’t know, 90% of serotonin (the “feel good” hormone) is produced in your gut, along with GABA (aids sleep), and dopamine (does a ton, but is known for motivation and pleasure). Your poop tells you if your gut is happy or needs some TLC.
Let’s look into the 7 types of poop. (Bristol Stool Scale)
Type 3 and 4 are the goal.
So, what to do if that isn’t what it looks like?
If yours looks like type 1 and 2, that is a sign of constipation. Make sure you are drinking enough water and add more fiber to your diet, like veggies and fruits.
What about the rest(Type 5, 6, and 7)? Those are signs of inflammation with 5 being mild to 7 being severe. This can be caused by something as simple as stress or a sign of a food intolerance.
Now, I am not saying you need to take pictures of your poo, but if you are experiencing any of the unwanted types, it could be a sign of something bigger. Getting your poop to look like Type 3 and 4 means you could be living happier and healthier. Please do not be afraid to speak up to your doctor or nutrition coach on such a subject. Let’s make poo not so taboo!
